about

“Richie sounds pissed on this record,” I say to B-17 guitarist, Calvin Brown, who replies, “Summer’s over,” in typical B-17 fashion - classic, succinct and real, but not without humour. Recorded in their home studio in Kensington Market, one of the last true Toronto neighbourhoods standing amidst the blight of glass castles, Goodbye is B-17’s second album, grown in the encroaching shadows. In an age when the Internet is decimating live subculture and musicianship, Brown, Richard Gibson (vocals, guitar), Nick Kervin (drums) and Clint Rogerson (vocals, bass) are an increasingly rare breed of rocker, known for their smoking live showmanship and ability to truly rip, expressing with clarity in the psych rock lexicon. Recorded by Robert Shortill (Doomsquad), Goodbye presents 8 tracks of melodic interplay, walls of distortion, psychedelic overtones, guitars, sitar and bold vocals, in conversation with predecessors 13th Floor Elevators, The Fall, and Spacemen 3. Despite preservationist tendencies, none of Goodbye’s distinct but cohesive songs sound canned. Goodbye reminds us that seasons phase, as do guitars, but the music endures.
